Below are some standards that can be met while doing the Create-Your-Own-Adventure Story Project in your classroom. These standards come from the Common Core Standards and can be found here. These standards are mostly for lower grades, but there are also a number of standards that are met in grades 6-12 as well. No matter what grade this project is completed in, there are numerous standards, reading, writing, and English language arts included, that are met. This list is only a few of the standards that can be applied to this project.
Reading Standards for Literature K-5:
- Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details (Kindergarten)
- Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events (1st Grade)
- Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action (2nd Grade)
- Explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting) (3rd Grade)
- Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text (4th Grade)
- Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions) (4th Grade)
Writing Standards K-5:
- With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed (Kindergarten)
- With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers (Kindergarten)
- With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed (1st Grade)
